When it comes to our water heaters in our home there are only a couple of time that we think about it. One time that we think about it is if we are in the shower and the water suddenly turns freezing cold and the second time is when the water heater explodes and there is water flying all over the place. When it comes to the water heater it is something that is out of sight and we rarely if ever think about it yet it is one of the easiest things to fix when it comes to saving energy. And saving money.

The first thing we can do to save energy is to turn down the heat down. Yes this is very simple but the most effective. To do this all we have to do is to go to the heater and turn down the thermostat. Now some of them wont have the temperature gauge on them and it will simply say hot or cold and there’s not a lot you can do about this but the newer ones which most people have will actually tell you the temperature and you can simply turn it down slightly. There is no harm in doing this and will actually save you a lot of energy. It is recommended that you have your thermostat set to around 120-130 degrees.

The next way to save energy and money through your water heater is also very simple and yet very effective although hardly anyone ever does it and that is to insulate your water heater. You can do this yourself very cheaply and easily. You could either create your own insultion which would just be something to wrap around the heater or you can buy a sort of heater blanket which will insulate the heater. The reason this works is becaue the heater will leak less heat and therefore you wont need to use the heater as much.
